We offer a full range of services and structured workshops which impart tailored training. The young people are able to socialise with their peers, in a secure and nurturing environment. The workshops include, group discussions; health workshops; i.e. ( basic hygiene, sex education, presentation skills, cooking, budgeting, creative writing, cv creating, art and drama).
The majority of these young people have experienced trauma and persecution and it is our aim to support them through this most difficult period of their young lives.
Activities provided
- DAILY Group and one-to-one structured English as a second language (ESOL) and Maths lessons.
- Outreach weekly Life-Skills and befriending. Young people taught valuable new skills and activities in controlled safe environment.
- One-to-one drop in providing practical and emotional support. Accessing services, Befriending, confidence Building, Counselling, Life skills, Emotional Support, English Tutoring, Job Applications, Maths Tutoring, Presentation Skills, Volunteering and any other general support needs.
- Structured group activities with local non-refugee young people sharing and actively participating in confidence orientated and structured recreational activities through community volunteering.
- Recruitment, training and coordination of volunteers.
- Raising awareness in the wider community of issues that refugees and asylum seekers face in daily life including Schools and Colleges visits and presentations.
- Development of new projects in response to identified needs – through consultation with young people who use the service.
All the activities provided are programmes designed to build confidence, provide safe opportunities for sharing and development of the young people and to enable their integration into British society.
The activities we provide whilst also being practical in terms of helping to equip them for life in this country, are also tailored to enable them to have other outlets to express and to understand their feelings and what they already faced in their young lives; the drama and art sessions are particularly important in this respect.
Aims
- To provide a service for young, unaccompanied asylum seekers and refugees whose lives have been affected by political violence and displacement.
- To provide a new support network of friends and mentors.
- To help young people to overcome their difficulties and develop their lives, hence aiding their integration into society.
- To complement existing services provided by social services and other local voluntary organisations to empower young people to be able to meet their own needs.
Objectives
To advance education and relieve financial hardship amongst those seeking asylum and those granted refugee status, primarily young people aged 16 – 21 residing in the London Borough of Hillingdon, in particular by the provision of…
- food, clothing, basic living equipment, advice and support services
- facilities for recreation or other leisure time occupation with the object of improving their conditions where they have need of such facilities by reason of their youth, age, infirmity or disablement, financial hardship or social and economic circumstances
…with a view to advancing them in life and to assist them to adapt within a new community
